The field is ready. Will the Monarchs be able to get to it?

Some of Mater Dei’s artificial-turf athletic fields have undergone renovations, specifically the football field used for lower-level games and for varsity and every other level football practice and the track that surrounds the football field.

The recent rain halted work on the track. Mater Dei football coach Bruce Rollinson said he was informed the track will be finished Wednesday. Mater Dei begins practice Thursday.

“It looks like it’s a go,’ ” Rollinson said.

If not, he said, the team will work out on the field that extends from left field of the baseball field to the fence that borders the south part of the parking lot.

CENTURY CONFERENCE UPDATE

All eight teams in the Century Conference start the season with Week 1 games, and thus start practice later this week or next week.

The Century Conference is made up of eight schools divided into the Crestview and North Hills leagues. League membership differs from sport to sport. For football, the Crestview has Esperanza, Foothill, Villa Park and Yorba Linda; the North Hills has Brea Olinda, El Dorado and El Modena.

Not only do the Crestview and North Hills teams play their league games, they also play cross-conference games – that is, all of the North Hills teams play all of the Crestview teams in nonleague games. So Century Conference games account for seven of their 10 regular-season games.

CENTURY FOOTBALL UPDATE

Century took its dead period over the end of June and early July. The Centurions finished their long summer of football practices last Wednesday, took a break and resume this Wednesday with the three-day conditioning period before going full contact in pads Monday.

“We needed a week to re-charge,” Century second-year coach Andrew Lapic said.

The Centurions will get a charge out of having an on-campus stadium. They play their first game in the new facility Sept. 18 against Bolsa Grande.
