A look at Orange County boys basketball:

• Tustin made 19 of 21 free throws Saturday in its 54-43 win over Corona del Mar in the championship game of the Beach Bash Tournament at Corona del Mar. T.J. Shorts, a 5-foot-6 junior point guard, made all 11 of his foul shots in the fourth quarter. Corona del Mar made only 12 of 42 shots from the floor and 3 of 8 from 3-point range, in that game.

• Tustin coach Ringo Bossenmeyer on Shorts: “You might think his size would be a disadvantage, but being smaller helps him get out of trouble on offense and he plays so low to the ground on defense. He’s got that ‘it’ factor you want in a point guard.”

Kendal Lauderdale, a 6-foot-8 junior forward who likely would have started this season at Orange Lutheran, was among the summertime transfers. He is at La Mirada. Lauderdale scored 23 points in a win over Santa Fe of Santa Fe Springs.

• This writer’s vote on the county top 10: 1. Mater Dei; 2. El Toro; 3. Canyon; 4. JSerra; 5. Dana Hills; 6. Saddleback Valley Christian; 7. Foothill; 8. Orange Lutheran; 9. Villa Park; 10. Mission Viejo. Much consideration went to Woodbridge, which has beaten Sonora and San Clemente and has one-point losses to Foothill and Dana Hills.

• Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran played Saturday in the Spalding Hoophall West at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Mater Dei overwhelmed Yates of Houston, 100-57, as Arizona signee Stanley Johnson scored 21 points with 12 rebounds and eight assists. Sophomore center M.J. Cage scored 22 with 14 rebounds for the Monarchs.

• Orange Lutheran lost to Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, 63-42. C.J. Hankins scored 15 points for Lutheran. Gorman was No. 9 in studentsports.com’s preseason national rankings which have not been updated.

• The CIF-Southern Section released its boys basketball polls Monday. Three county teams are No. 1 in their divisions: Mater Dei in Division 1AA, Santa Margarita in Division 3AA and Saddleback Valley Christian in Division 5AA.

• This week’s tournaments include the Irvine World News/Gary Raya Classic, the North Orange County Championships and the Douglas Uselton Memorial Tournament.

• The IWN/Raya is at various sites. The championship game is Saturday at 6 p.m. at Tustin High. Among the teams in it are Dana Hills, El Toro, Tesoro, Tustin and Woodbridge.

• The North Orange County tournament is at Canyon, Servite, Sonora and Troy. That tournament includes Canyon, Los Alamitos, Orange Lutheran, Saddleback Valley Christian, Sonora and Villa Park.

• The Uselton tournament is at Oxford Academy and Western. That one includes Aliso Niguel, Cypress and Western.

• The CIF-SS has not yet ruled on the athletic eligibility of senior guard Mario Soto, who transferred from Mater Dei to Saddleback Valley Christian two weeks ago.

• Saddleback Valley Christian and Mater Dei are in the same half of the 16-team bracket of the Orange Holiday Classic, which begins Dec. 26 at Hope University in Fullerton where all OHC tournament games will be played. If Mater Dei beats Kalani of Hawaii and Saddleback Valley Christian beats Orange in the first round, then SVC and, if eligible, Soto would play Mater Dei in a second-round game Dec. 27 at 8:30 p.m.

• Saddleback Valley Christian’s coach is Tom Lewis. Lewis was a CIF player of the year in 1985 at Mater Dei, where he was one of Monarchs coach Gary McKnight‘s first great players. Lewis also coached at JSerra and was a Mater Dei assistant.
