Ureno, Martinez lead Katella past Colony
ANAHEIM - Javier Ureno pitched a shutout and Jonathon Martinez made a crucial defensive play and drove in the winning run as Katella defeated Colony of Ontario, 2-0, in a CIF-SS Division 4 first-round playoff game Thursday at Boysen Park.
Ureno notched five strikeouts, including striking out the side looking in the first inning, didn't walk a batter and scattered six hits over seven innings.
The Knights senior allowed the Titans (22-8) to get runners in scoring position in four of the innings, but he managed to pitch out of trouble each time. He got some help from his fielders.
With runners on first and third and two outs in the fourth, Martinez, who was playing center field, made a charging shoestring catch on a sinking line drive off the bat off Edgar Alferez.
Titans pitcher Aaron Bernal was also effective, keeping the Knights (20-8) off the scoreboard for five innings.
Katella finally broke through in the sixth when Clint Salisbury reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error. Austin Blake came in as a pinch runner for Salisbury.
Martinez drilled a triple to right-center, giving the Knights the only run they would need.
Later in the inning, Edgar Menendez singled home Martinez to make it 2-0.
Katella advances to face North Torrance in the second round. That game will be Tuesday at North Torrance.
