Bob Marshall resigned as Marina’s baseball coach Wednesday, Athletic Director Michelle Spencer announced.

Marshall was the Register’s Orange County baseball coach of the year in 2016, his sixth season as the team’s coach. He previously had been an assistant at Marina, his alma mater, for 16 seasons under Paul Renfrow.

Marshall, 48, wrote in a text message that he “stepped down to focus on my health.”

“We thank Bob for his dedicated service to the student athletes of Marina High School,” Spencer wrote in an email announcing Marshall’s resignation.

Marina assistant coach Jeff Sellers said Marshall told him he was going to resign for health reasons.

“He didn’t go into details,” said Sellers, whose son, Justin, is a former Dodgers infielder. “It didn’t sound like he wanted to resign. I knew there were some parent issues, and some things like that that every team has, every program has.

“I told Bob I was disappointed, but I said if it was affecting his health then that’s what he should do. I didn’t pry into it.”
