Marina on Wednesday announced it has hired longtime Long Beach Poly assistant Jeff Turley as its varsity football head coach.

Turley has been Poly’s defensive coordinator since 2001. He also has coached at St. Anthony of Long Beach.

Marina earlier this year named Kevin Oberlander as its varsity football head coach. Oberlander, varsity head coach at Western Christian of Upland, lacked the required teaching credential needed at Marina. Marina released Oberlander and restarted its search for a football coach.

George Pascoe resigned as Marina’s coach after the 2013 season, his fourth coaching the Vikings.

Marina was 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the Sunset League last season. The Vikings have not won a league game in nine years.

Turley said he was attracted to the challenge of making Marina a consistent winner.

“I like the idea of trying to turn around a team that was a powerhouse in the 1980s,” Turley said. “This was a good team. I’d like to regain that, to bring it back to what it once was.”

Turley will be a full-time physical education teacher at Marina.
