Krantz rallies St. Margaret's to stunning win over Valley Christian
CERRITOS - St. Margaret’s overcame an 11-point deficit in the final quarter to beat Valley Christian of Cerritos, 30-27, on Friday night in a nonleague game.
“They put us in a hole,” Coach Stephen Barbee said of Valley Christian. “We really just needed to execute our plays, and in the end we played our game.”
Quarterback George Krantz threw two touchdown passes in the final minutes, plus a two-point converion pass.
The Tartans’ comeback began with an interception by Koa Todd.
They put together a steady drive and finally scored with a 7-yard pass from Krantz to to wide receiver Austin Locke. The two also teamed up for a pass on the two-point conversion that cut St. Margaret’s deficit to 27-24.
On the ensuing kickoff, the ball took an odd bounce and St. Margaret’s (3-0) came up with it.
Two penalties (offsides and personal foul) by Valley Christian aided St. Margaret’s drive. With 1:30 left on the clock, Krantz threw a touchdown pass to his brother, Nicolas Krantz, giving St. Margaret’s the lead, 30-27.
There was still a minute left, but the game ended when Valley Christian’s Gianni Hurd was injured and required a prolonged treatment on the field for an apparent sternum injury.
