SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – St. Margaret’s and Bishop’s entered Friday night’s matchup with matching 2-0 records and neither side having played a close game.

Friday’s contest at St. Margaret’s turned into an instant classic, however, as the Tartans pulled out a thrilling 42-35 victory over the visiting Knights.

St. Margaret’s had an opportunity to put the game away in the fourth quarter after a 90-yard interception return from senior Nick Shanks gave it a 35-21 lead.

However, Bishop’s didn’t let up, using touchdowns from quarterback Jeffrey Jackson and running back AJ Britanico to tie the score at 35 with 1:35 remaining.

St. Margaret’s drove down to the Bishop 25 with under a minute to play, but a costly interception sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, St. Margaret’s quarterback George Krantz took matters into his own hand with a touchdown strike on its first possession. Bishop’s was not able to counter the Tartans touchdown.

Britanico rushed 31 times for 291 yards and a touchdown. The passing game was strong for the Knights as well as Jackson completed 18 of 39 passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns.

St. Margaret’s Taylor Freitas made six catches for 123 yards and two TDs.
