St. Margaret's survives with overtime win

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – St. Margaret’s and Bishop’s entered Friday night’s matchup with matching 2-0 records and neither side having played a close game.

Friday’s contest at St. Margaret’s turned into an instant classic, however, as the Tartans pulled out a thrilling 42-35 victory over the visiting Knights.

St. Margaret’s had an opportunity to put the game away in the fourth quarter after a 90-yard interception return from senior Nick Shanks gave it a 35-21 lead.

However, Bishop’s didn’t let up, using touchdowns from quarterback Jeffrey Jackson and running back AJ Britanico to tie the score at 35 with 1:35 remaining.

St. Margaret’s drove down to the Bishop 25 with under a minute to play, but a costly interception sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, St. Margaret’s quarterback George Krantz took matters into his own hand with a touchdown strike on its first possession. Bishop’s was not able to counter the Tartans touchdown.

Britanico rushed 31 times for 291 yards and a touchdown. The passing game was strong for the Knights as well as Jackson completed 18 of 39 passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns.
