SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – The story of this this game was the run game, with each team rushing for over 300 yards.

St. Margaret’s senior running back Oscar Gomez headlined that effort, leading his team to a 44-21 win over Whittier Christian on Friday night at St. Margaret’s High.

Gomez rushed for 271 yards and two touchdowns, with three runs of over 40 yards for the Tartans (3-0).

While Gomez put up great numbers, it was really the defense that helped put this victory away. The defense had two turnovers returned for touchdowns: one fumble recovery in the end zone and one interception returned for a touchdown.

Whittier Christian (0-3) was able to keep it close in the first half, going into the locker room down only 24-14, but St. Margaret’s defense was able to stop them for most of the second half.

Whittier Christian was led by sophomore Justin Osborn on the ground with 146 yards, and senior Noah Evans through the air. Evans totaled 106 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Despite good efforts by Whittier Christian, St. Margaret’s was able to capitalize on a large amount of big touchdown plays.

This was the first time St. Margaret’s defense allowed more than six points.
