Balanced St. Margaret's too much for Aquinas

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO - Timely offense and a stifling defensive effort were key in St. Margaret’s 28-0 victory over Aquinas of San Bernardino in the first round of the CIF-SS East Valley Division playoffs Friday night.

St. Margaret’s led at halftime, 14-0, and wide receiver Andrew Torok made the play of the game early in the third quarter when he took a short pass from quarterback Josh Davis, broke a tackle and proceeded to take it 62 yards to put the Tartans up, 21-0.

Torok finished with five receptions for 70 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter when both teams got the ball just once, St. Margarets got started when senior Chase McClure took a punt 55 yards for a TD for a 7-0 second-quarter lead.

Near the end of the quarter, Davis found Torok in the end zone for the 7-yard score.

Davis ended the night with 112 yards on 5-of-11 passing, with two touchdowns and an interception.

Aquinas (6-5), the No. 2 team out of the Ambassador League, was unable to get going offensively against a swarming Tartans defense, which forced four turnovers.

Running back Romero Flores, who totaled more than 2,000 yards on the season, finished the night with 96 yards on 21 carries.

St. Margarets (10-1), the division’s No. 2 team, will travel to play Rim of the World of Lake Arrowhead in the second round next week.
