Corona del Mar All-County water polo player Maddie Musselman has withdrawn from Corona del Mar to pursue making the U.S. Olympic team, Sea Kings athletic director Don Grable confirmed Friday night.

Musselman, a junior, has enrolled in an on-line school, Grable said.

“She’ll always be a Sea Queen,” Grable said at Corona del Mar’s CIF boys basketball game at Azusa Pacific. “We’re proud of her.”

Musselman helped Corona del Mar reach the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals this past season, though she has been an impact player since her freshman year.

She also has played for the U.S. national team. Her strengths are defense, speed and passing while her offensive game continues to progress.

It’s been rare for rising SoCal water polo players — boys or girls — to withdraw from high school for Olympic pursuits.
