NEWPORT BEACH – Corona del Mar got its second shutout in as many games Thursday with a 37-0 win over Dana Hills in a nonleague game at Newport Harbor High.
The Sea Kings (2-0) pushed their winning streak to 28 games.
Corona del Mar, which won CIF-Southern Section Southern Division championships the past three years, has not lost since a 24-7 defeat to Capistrano Valley early in the 2012 season. The county football record for consecutive victories is 44 set by St. Margaret’s, 2006-09.
The Sea Kings last week beat La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad, 38-0.
Against Dana Hills (0-2), Corona del Mar collected five sacks and limited the Dolphins to 94 yards of total offense.
Bo St. Geme caught two touchdown passes and sophomore quarterback Chase Garbers ran for two touchdowns. Garbers rotated in at quarterback with junior Peter Bush, who completed 13 of 23 passes for 204 yards with two interceptions while playing a majority of the series.
Cole Martin rushed for 93 yards on 12 carries for Corona del Mar.
A 5-yard touchdown pass from Bush to St. Geme started the scoring in the first quarter. A 36-yard field goal by Jason Neiger, a 20-yard touchdown run by Garbers and St. Geme’s catch of a short pass that he turned into a 58-yard scoring play made it 23-0 at halftime.
Garbers scored on a 46-yard run in the third quarter. Jaydin Moses completed the scoring on a 1-yard dive in the fourth quarter.
Parker Chase and Mat Flores had two sacks apiece for Corona del Mar.
Corona del Mar coach Scott Meyer said this year’s Sea Kings defense be better than last year’s that allowed only 10 points per game in a 16-0 season.
“Potentially it could be,” Meyer said. “Ten of these guys are back from last year’s team. They’re faster, they’re bigger and they’re stronger. They know our defense so well that sometimes they get themselves into the right position even when the other team’s offense shows us something we didn’t expect.”
Corona del Mar, ranked No. 7 in Orange County, plays No. 10 El Toro next Friday at Newport Harbor. Dana Hills plays at San Clemente next Friday.
Chase said trying to keep the winning streak going is not a burden.
“It’s not about the streak,” he said. “We really don’t care about that. We’re just taking it game by game.”
