Mike Maceranka confirmed Friday that he has resigned as the football coach at Segerstrom and accepted the same position at Laguna Hills, his alma mater.

Maceranka replaces Bruce Ingalls at Laguna Hills. Ingalls retired after the 2015 season, his 18th as the team’s coach.

Maceranka, 41, was a quarterback and defensive back at Laguna Hills when Ingalls was the team’s defensive coordinator.

“To replace my mentor is amazing,” Maceranka said.

Maceranka has been Segerstrom’s coach since the school opened and played its first varsity season in 2006.

“The hardest part of this is leaving something I started,” he said. “The kids at Segerstrom have been great.”

Maceranka lives in Laguna Hills and has two daughters who will be attending Laguna Hills in the coming years.

The Jaguars won league championships in five of the past seven seasons, including this past season. He was 68-44-1 at Segerstrom.

Laguna Hills was 8-4 overall and finished tied for second place in the Sea View League in 2015.

Maceranka will join the faculty at Laguna Hills, where he will teach economics, in early February.
