HUNTINGTON BEACH – Though it’s his brother at Mater Dei that normally gets the headlines these days, Edison’s Grant Lowary finally got his moment Friday night.
After replacing an injured Matt Gane in the second quarter, Lowary threw for 183 yards and a touchdown and led the Chargers past Huntington Beach, 29-14, in a Sunset League matchup and classic rivalry game at Huntington Beach High.
Edison (5-2, 2-0) was without the services of Gane the entire week due to a quad injury. Lowary took the majority of the snaps in practice but started the game as a spectator against the Oilers.
After a sloppy first quarter marred by penalties and turnovers, Lowary, the brother of star Mater Dei quarterback Jack Lowary, came in and sparked the Chargers.
“I always prepare for the time, your chance,” Lowary said. “We didn’t really execute the game plan well, but we came out with a win.”
It was an emotional game and much anticipated rematch for Edison. The Chargers lost to Huntington Beach (1-6, 0-2) in the CIF SS Southwest playoffs a season ago after blowing them out, 48-6, in the regular season. The Oilers went on to win the Southwest Division championship.
“Our kids were fired up,” Edison coach Dave White said.
The Oilers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second quarter behind Chad James’ 37-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Thompson. Lowary answered back, though, scoring on a 1-yard sneak at the goal line. A 42-yard field goal gave Edison a 10-7 halftime lead.
Huntington Beach cut into Edison’s third quarter lead behind Travis Heer’s 34-yard scoring run to make the score 16-14. Less than a minute later, though, Lowary secured the win with a 46-yard scoring toss to Jacob Price.
