In the world of high school golf in Orange County, not very many people ever heard of Brittany Farrell.

That is until last week. Now everybody has heard of her.

That’s because Farrell, a senior at Mission Viejo High, has done what no other girls golfer at the school has ever done – win a CIF-Southern Section Individual championship.

Farrell, a four-year letterman, posted the lowest round of her career Nov. 7, shooting a 5-under 66 to claim a two-stroke victory at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente. The effort came just a week after she posted a then lowest-round ever with a 68 to place second at the CIF-SS Southern Regionals.

Her effort advanced the Dove Canyon resident to yesterday’s WSCGA Southern California Championships – the farthest any MVHS golfer has ever gone. If she finished in the top nine, she advances to the CIF State Championships, scheduled for Nov. 20 at Quail Lodge Golf Course in Carmel.

Q. Do you know you are now considered the best girls golfer in the history of Mission Viejo High?

A. Really? No. I thought there would be a lot more golfers better than me.

Q. What’s been the key to your successful season?

A. A number of things: I’ve changed my putting stroke, and worked on not only hitting for distance, but controlling where I hit. Both have definitely improved.

Q. MVHS coach Norman Scott says your attitude on the course is a lot better. Is that true?

A. Yes, definitely. I look at things a lot differently now. I still keep my game face on, but I’m a lot more positive about things. It’s helped that my coach and parents all believe in me. Their motivation has helped me a lot.

Q. Are you surprised of your success?

A. I’m in shock. If you honestly told me this is where I would be at this time of the season, I would’ve said ‘no way.’ But I’m really happy with where I’m at.

Q. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

A. I like to draw patterns and doodles. I’m definitely not a good drawer, but I like doing it.
