OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:

WESTMINSTER LIONS

Coach: Ted McMillen

Last season: 9-3 overall, 5-0 league

Scouting report: This will likely be a rebuilding year for the Lions as only three starters – two on offense, one on defense – return. Five positions were still blank on Coach Ted McMillen’s depth chart just a couple of weeks ago. The Lions will have plenty of new names on the field this season, but their experience at key positions, mainly quarterback, might make them competitive. Matt Dinh returns at quarterback after completing 57 of 130 passes for 956 yards, which ranked third in league. He also threw for seven TDs and rushed for 388 yards on 58 carries. Alejandro Reyes will likely be Dinh’s go-to receiver. Last fall, Reyes hauled in nine passes for 146 yards.

Bottom line: While the Lions have talent at the skill positions, their overall lack of experience will make it hard for them to repeat as Golden West League champs.

Players to watch: Isayah Anderson, WR, Jr.; Josh Avila, RB, Jr.; Matt Dinh, QB, Sr.; Michael Gurrola, RB, Sr.; Alejandro Reyes, WR, Sr.
