Yorba Linda girls golf coach Dennis Riggs says his players lose focus when they’re not playing an important match against a Crestview League rival.

That showed on the Mustangs’ scorecards Tuesday during a nonleague match against Canyon. No one in their lineup broke 40, but the No. 9 Mustangs managed to defeat the Comanches, 212-232, at Anaheim Hills Golf Course.

Brittany Sok medaled with a 4-over-par 40 to lead the Mustangs (8-2), and TCU-bound Brooke Graebe, a two-time state Championships qualifier, added a 6-over 42.

After her match, Graebe sprinted off the course and headed for her weekly world religion class at Santiago Canyon College.

“Brooke wasn’t focused at all,” Riggs said. “It (not focusing) is happening a lot lately, but I would still put my top four girls up against any other girls in the county.

“I am getting a bit nervous about the Foothill match.”

The Mustangs and No. 8 Foothill meet Oct. 20 at Tustin Ranch Golf Course in a match that will likely decide the inaugural Crestview League championship.

Yorba Linda is in first place. The Knights are in second place with one loss, which came in the season opener against Yorba Linda.

The Knights were missing one of their top players, Emily Sumner, that day. She has since returned to the lineup.

“She is a good player. She makes the team stronger,” Riggs said of Sumner. “They (Foothill) are stronger 1-6 than we are, so my top four girls will have to beat theirs by seven strokes.”
