The Sunset and Pacific Coast leagues in football are among the Orange County leagues that plan to appeal their placement in playoff divisions for future school years.

This week the CIF-Southern Section released its recommended playoff groupings for 2014-15 and 2015-16. Leagues can appeal their placements Wednesday. If the appeals process does not settle the issues, then the CIF-SS Council would meet on June 6.

In football, the Sunset was sent to the West Valley Division with the Baseline, Foothill, South Coast and Southwestern leagues. The South Coast is the only other Orange County league in that group.

Edison football coach Dave White said he is not happy with the West Valley placement because he wants the Sunset League to return to the Pac-5 Division.

“I would rather play Mater Dei, Servite, Long Beach Poly like we did for 15 years,” White said. “Playing those teams gets our kids excited. I would rather travel to the Bowl (Santa Ana Stadium) or Cerritos College for a game instead of going out to Temecula or Upland or wherever.”

The Pacific Coast League was moved to the Southwest Division, an all-Orange County division that would also include the Crestview, Empire, Freeway and Sea View leagues. The Crestview is one of two new leagues under the eight-school Century Conference umbrella.

In baseball, the Empire League will appeal its move from Division 2 to Division 1. The Garden Grove League remained in Division 3 for baseball, but will appeal that.

Other county leagues making appeals: the Academy League (swimming), Sea View (wrestling), South Coast (boys tennis) and Orange Coast (boys volleyball, girls water polo).
