The girls water polo season begins its push toward the postseason this week with the Irvine Southern California Championships.

Top-ranked Laguna Beach (19-0) is the top seed for the 32-team tournament, which runs Thursday through Saturday. The games will be played at Woollett Aquatics Center, Corona del Mar and Foothill.

The other high seeds are Mater Dei, San Marcos, Dos Pueblos of Goleta and tournament newcomer Orange Lutheran.

Top league matches this week include La Habra at Sunny Hills (Tuesday), San Clemente at El Toro (Tuesday), Mater Dei at Santa Margarita (Tuesday), Los Alamitos vs. Huntington Beach at Newport Harbor (Wednesday), Segerstrom at Ocean View (Wednesday) and Cypress at Kennedy (Thursday).

The playoffs begin Feb. 14.

GIRLS SOCCER

Orange County has long been a girls soccer power. This fact is most evident in the latest CIF-SS divisional polls.

Seventeen county schools are ranked in Monday’s CIF-SS polls with at least one team in each of the seven divisions. Five of the top six Division 1 spots are occupied by county teams.

Three O.C. schools are currently top-ranked with JSerra in Division 1, Corona del Mar in Division 2 and Los Amigos in Division 6.

Aliso Niguel and Laguna Beach are second in Divisions 1 and 4, and Katella is third in Division 6.

WRESTLING

This is the final week of league duals and there are two league titles on the line Tuesday night.

Sonora visits Fullerton in the Freeway League. Both teams are 4-0. The match begins at approximately 6:30 p.m.

In the Sunset League, Marina hosts Fountain Valley. Both teams are 4-0. The match begins at 5 p.m. …

The CIF-SS Dual Meet Championships are Saturday. The majority of the county league will be in the Coastal Division, which will be held at Marina High.

The Orange, Pacific Coast and Sea View leagues will be in the Southern Division at Redondo Union High.

Pairings will be released Thursday at 1 p.m. Wrestling begins at 11 a.m. Saturday.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Kennedy’s Lauren Madison Camp won the Lady Cavalier Classic at Montclair High on Saturday.

Camp, a freshman at 137 pounds, won four matches by fall in the first period and earned the Champion of Champions award.

Santa Ana’s Patty Escobar finished first at 121 pounds.

The girls wrestling qualifiers are this weekend. All of the county teams will be in the Southern Region qualifier at Tustin High. The top eight wrestlers at each weight class advance to the CIF Individual Championships.
