The race for the Sunset League boys soccer championship took an interesting turn last week.

The Sailors had outscored their first five league opponents, 12-4.

The Sailors (5-1-0 in league) are still in first place in league with 10 points, but Edison beat Marina on Friday to improve to 4-2-0 in league for eight points. Two days earlier, Los Alamitos beat the Chargers, 2-1, putting Edison two games behind the Sailors.

Los Alamitos is in third place in league with seven points at 3-2-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Sunset League for girls soccer was expected to be one of the most competitive in the county, based on rankings and nonleague records, but the league’s coaches probably didn’t expect this kind of tight competition.

Through 18 games, the Sunset League has produced eight overtime games with only two ties and golden goals aplenty.

Third-ranked Edison sits in first place with three wins in its three extra-session contests. The Chargers have a 2½-game lead over No. 6 Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach. The Chargers defeated the Griffins and Oilers in overtime.

Huntington Beach has played in four overtime games, including both of its games against Newport Harbor. The Oilers and Sailors split the two match-ups.
