Cross country notes: St. Margaret's boys, Sage Hills girls strong in preview meet
St. Margaret’s’ boys and Sage Hill’s girls took the first step toward Academy League supremacy in the league's preview meet last week at Mason Park in Irvine.
Nic Gitter’s victory in 15:43 paced the Tartans, who also had Matthew Colglazier and Charlie Smith finish in the top five. St. Margaret’s edged Crean Lutheran, 25-37.
Crean Lutheran’s Ellah Hess won the girls race in 19:25, but Sage Hill put all five scoring runners in the top 12 to come away with the team victory, 34-49, over St. Margaret’s.
The Academy League title hunt is shaped by a point system. Teams receive one point for each team that they defeat in the cluster meets, and they earn two points for each team they beat in the league finals.
In the Sunset League preview, sophomore Alexis Garcia won the boys race in 15:57 to lead Newport Harbor over Los Alamitos, 44-49.
A tight girls race went to Fountain Valley, which clipped Los Alamitos, 34-36. Griffins freshman Olivia Velasco (18:30) ran away with the individual win by 13 seconds.
On Friday, host Sunny Hills put on a good showing in the Wayne Walker Invitational at Craig Park in Fullerton. Gideon Pichardo and Kyle Al-Rawi placed in the top four to help the Lancers (1:20:15) to a runner-up showing behind St. John Bosco (1:19:34).
The Lancers also got an individual win from Jonathan Kim (17:11) in the boys freshman race.
On the girls side, Corona del Mar got grade-level wins from senior Raquel Powers (18:00, 3rd overall) and freshman Julia Tung (18:50, 9th overall).
