LAKE FOREST – The Capistrano Valley boys volleyball team had to adjust its lineup when it lost senior outside hitter Bobby Gaines for the rest of the season due to an injury.

“The fact we don’t have him and these guys are stepping up and playing well, is a testament to our boys,” Capistrano Valley coach Jason Elder said. “Early on, we were playing with our opposite Pat (Furlong) as a middle and had someone else at opposite. Jason Vetter, our other middle, developed well enough to play some defense and block some balls to where we could put Furlong on the right side and that really balanced us out.”

Tuesday night, those moves continued to pay off as Capistrano Valley swept host El Toro, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22, and clinched the outright Sea View League title.

El Toro (13-12, 5-2) will finish second in the Sea View League.

Capistrano Valley (19-11, 7-0) was led by Furlong and Evan Lanning with 11 kills. Chris Orem and Andrew McSweeney had eight and seven, respectively.

“We set goals and No. 1 was to win league,” Elder said. “And one (goal) was to win CIF Division 2. We won league and I really like to finish (league) undefeated and go into CIF on a good note.”

The Cougars are ranked eighth in CIF-SS Division 2.

“It feels great to win league,” Capistrano Valley setter Colby Elder said. “Third year on varsity and we finally won league. We came out and knew they were going to come out strong and on their senior night, but we came out with a lot of fire and heart and played well.”

Cade Krok led the Chargers with eight kills. Chris Guithues and Phillip Barker had seven apiece.

The Cougars finish league play against Aliso Niguel on Thursday. El Toro is at Mission Viejo on Thursday.

The CIF-SS boys volleyball playoff pairings will be released May 6.
