Mater Dei’s boys water polo team put the final touches on its resume to be the top seed in the CIF Division 1 playoffs by defeating visiting Corona del Mar, 17-8, in a nonleague game Thursday.
Left-hander Thomas Dunstan scored on his first three shots en route to a seven-goal outburst that pushed the top-ranked team in Orange County and Division 1 past the Sea Kings (17-8), ranked sixth in Division 1.
Dunstan also had four assists and five steals. The senior scored on his first three shots for a 3-0 lead and then made a steal to start a counterattack.
Dunstan tossed an over-the-head, backward pass to Luke Wyatt, who scored for a 4-0 lead with 3:15 left in the first.
Will Lapkin added two goals as Mater Dei led, 6-0, after the first period.
The Monarchs (25-2) finished 7 for 11 on the power play, while Corona del Mar went 0 for 2. Attackers Will Rodosky and Foster Hoose each scored twice for Corona del Mar.
The playoff pairings will be released Saturday at 2 p.m.
In the Golden West League:
Segerstrom 16, Ocean View 5: The host Lions, ranked No. 1 in Division 6, captured the league title.
In the Empire League:
Valencia 17, Pacifica 6: The host Tigers finished 5-0 in league to claim the league title.
