Chuck Petersen has Servite-is.

Servite-is can be found among coaches who voluntarily put together a grueling nonleague schedule.

Of course, no team can pick-and-choose its league schedule. Petersen coaches Orange Lutheran. Lutheran has to play Trinity League opponents JSerra, Mater Dei. Santa Margarita, Servite and St. John Bosco.

For nonleague games, Petersen set up a schedule in which all five opponents made the playoffs in 2014. Some Lancers nonleague opponents had great years: Centennial of Corona, which won the CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division title; De La Salle of Concord, which beat Centennial in the CIF State Open Division championship game; Vista Murietta, which played in the CIF-SS West Valley Division final.

“It’s hard to get people to play us,” Petersen said. “This should be fun and challenging.”

Servite still has Servite-is, of course. The Friars’ brutal nonleague schedule includes De La Salle, which was 14-0 last year, and Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, which went 15-0. Those are away games for Servite.

One could go to every Lutheran or Servite game and see a great game every time. But there are so many other great matchups out there, week after week, in Orange County football – rivalry games, games matching up excellent quarterbacks, games that will decide league championships and games that will influence who goes to the playoffs and who does not.

Here is a week-by-week look at what will be some of the more interesting games in county football in 2015:

Week 0, Bishop Amat of La Puente vs. Mater Dei at Santa Ana Stadium, Friday: Both are ranked in the state top 10. CalHiSports.com has Bishop Amat at No. 4 and Mater Dei at No. 8. (De La Salle of Concord is No. 1.) Both might still be deciding upon starting quarterbacks in the hours leading to kickoff. This game could decide their starting quarterbacks for the remainder of the season, or perhaps that won’t come for another week or two.

Week 1, Buena Park vs. Edison at Huntington Beach High, Sept. 4: Buena Park has been the JSerra of north county. That is, a program that has taken big steps year after year. Buena Park is knocking on the door of the county top 10. Winning this game would kick down that door. This game has two excellent quarterbacks, Zach Taylor of Buena Park and Grant Lowary of Edison, who are ranked No. 8 and 9, respectively, in the Register’s preseason list of the county’s top 10 quarterbacks.

Week 2, Mission Viejo at La Habra, Sept. 11: Are these the two best public-school teams in Orange County? Perhaps. Mission Viejo is coming off winning the CIF-SS West Valley Division title last year. La Habra must be considered a top contender in the Southwest Division this year. There are outstanding players all over the field in this one, including two who are on the OC Varsity list of top 10 quarterbacks, Mission’s Brock Johnson (No. 7) and the Highlanders’ Eric Barreire (No. 3). On defense, La Habra has a star in Jake Colacion (No. 2 on the linebacker rankings) and the Diablos have Carter Hartmann (No. 3 on the defensive linemen list).

Week 3, Newport Harbor vs. Corona del Mar at Orange Coast College, Sept. 17: If we don’t have a feel for either team at this point of the season, this game will help. Newport Harbor looks like at best it is the No. 3 team in the Sunset League. Corona del Mar should be the top team, as usual, in the Pacific Coast League. But the guy who coached Corona del Mar to three straight CIF-SS titles, Scott Meyer, departed for Servite. We will see in this 54th rendering of the Battle of the Bay if CdM keeps it going and if Harbor is a playoff contender. Corona del Mar has defeated Newport Harbor the past two years, but Harbor has a 38-15 advantage in the series.

Week 4, Dana Hills at Garden Grove, Sept. 24: Garden Grove beat Dana Hills last year, 14-12. Garden Grove went on to finish 13-1 and win the Southern Division championship. Dana Hills went 1-9, having gotten the win via forfeit. Dana Hills has a new coach, Phil Skinner, who is taking on the “change the culture” challenge. The Dolphins have a couple of other tough ones on their nonleague schedule, including Corona del Mar, San Clemente and Tustin, before opening South Coast League action against (gulp) Mission Viejo. A win in this game would do wonders for the psyche of the regrouping Dolphins. For Garden Grove, beating any south county team, especially a South Coast League team, adds to the momentum the Argonauts are expected to have by this time of the season.

Week 5, Tesoro at San Clemente, Oct. 2: Two of south county’s better and more consistent programs hook up. Tesoro has a great quarterback, Devon Modster. San Clemente has perhaps the best running back duo in the county, Vlad Dzhabiyev and Brandon Reaves, both of whom are on the OC Varsity preseason list of top-10 running backs in the county. It’s the final nonleague game for both teams. Tesoro plays El Toro the following week in a South Coast League opener. San Clemente plays Capistrano Valley in a Sea View League opener the following week. Beating a good opponent before starting league is always the preferred result.

Week 6, Los Alamitos vs. Edison at Huntington Beach High, Oct. 8: This Sunset League opener probably decides the league championship. Both teams have returning all-league quarterbacks, Jack Telenko at Los Alamitos and Lowary at Edison. These could be high-scoring clubs. The teams could be a bit shaky on defense. Coaches John Barnes and Dave White have nearly 400 wins between them. Some season soon is going to be the final season for both. Maybe this is that season. Whatever, they both would love another league championship and their players would love to give that to them.

Week 7, Buena Park at La Habra, Oct. 16: La Habra has won 40 Freeway League games in a row coming into this season. That is close to the county record of 44, set by Mission Viejo (2000-07). The team that seems most capable of ending the streak is Buena Park. The Coyotes might have their best team since they played in a CIF-SS championship game in 2001 (although it’s possible last year’s Buena Park team was better than the ’01 team). Both teams have excellent players, and both are hungry. La Habra hates that it lost in the first round of the playoffs last year, and Buena Park might still be angry that it lost to the Highlanders last season by one touchdown.

Week 8, Canyon at El Modena, Oct. 22: If you’re looking for a balanced league, examine the North Hills League. There does not look to be a whole lot of separation among the four teams – Brea Olinda, Canyon, El Dorado and El Modena. Canyon went 3-0 in league last year while El Modena had its best season in years, advancing to the CIF-SS Southern Division semifinals. In a four-team league like this one, every league game is crucial and every game has gigantic playoff implications. This one could be for the league championship.

Week 9, Villa Park vs. Foothill at Tustin High, Oct. 29: Villa Park went 3-0 in the Crestview League last year. Foothill went 2-1, with that loss to Villa Park by the score of 49-7. Villa Park-Foothill looks like the game that again will determine the league champion. When you think of county sports rivalries, you probably think of the Trinity League rivalries or the ones in south county. Well, this corner of Orange County has some nasty ones, too, and in a variety of sports on the fields, on the courts and even (and sometimes especially) in the stands. This game is going to be fun.

Week 10, Mater Dei vs. Santa Margarita at Trabuco Hills High, Nov. 6: Who knows what this game could mean? League championship? Playoffs seedings? Who gets into the playoffs and who does not? Who has the most balloons in an archway or tied to the grandstands? Whatever is at stake, this should be a glorious game. We already are pumped that this Santa Margarita home game is at Trabuco Hills instead of Saddleback College, which is Santa Margarita’s usual home field. Maybe the schedule-maker anticipates that Saddleback College’s football stadium will be condemned by Nov. 6.
