OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
CANYON COMANCHES
Coach: Mike Ogas
Last season: 6-7 overall, 3-0 league
Scouting report: It wasn’t until midway through last Canyon established itself as an up-tempo, run-based attack that averaged 45 carries for 260 rushing yards over the final seven weeks of the season. With senior quarterback Jason Harman back pulling the strings and Charlie Treanor joining him in the backfield, the Comanches offense has a number of proven playmakers, but they will be relying on an offensive line that features four new starters. Fortunately for Ogas, the Comanches defense returns 10 starters, including a pair of hard-nosed linebackers in Avery Jones (92 tackles, 8.5 sacks) and Blake Suttle (95 tackles, 7 sacks). With games against Troy, San Juan Hills and Edison lined up before going into league play, Canyon has put together another arduous nonleague schedule. While the record might not indicate it early on, the experience will pay major dividends come league and postseason play.
Bottom line: If the offensive line can open up holes for Harman and the running backs, and a veteran defense plays up to its potential, Canyon should be considered the favorite in the North Hills League and one of the top two or three teams in the Southern Division.
Players to watch: Jason Harman, QB, Sr.; Trace Hobbs, WR/S, Sr.; Avery Jones, LB, Sr.; Blake Suttle, LB, Sr.; Charlie Treanor, RB/S, Sr.; Noah White, TE, Sr.
