OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
SUNNY HILLS LANCERS
Coach: Pete Karavedas
Last season: 5-5 overall, 0-5 league
Scouting report: A varsity assistant at Sunny Hills the past two seasons, Pete Karavedas takes over a Lancers program that finds itself suffering from a recurring problem: depth. There’s not a lack of talent on Sunny Hills’ roster. Quarterback/defensive back Malcolm Dixon has been offered by six Ivy League schools, and he’s joined in the backfield by All-Freeway League running back David Cabral. Dixon and Cabral will start both ways, as will a handful of other players, making matters even more difficult in what’s collectively being described as the deepest Freeway League in recent memory. “We’ve got to put in more work if we expect to achieve something greater than what we’ve done in the past,” Karavedas explained. “If we want to get over that hump, it comes down to outworking everybody else.”
Bottom line: The Lancers are underdogs again this season, but one of the program’s chief goals will be ending a 25-game league losing streak.
Players to watch: David Cabral, RB/LB, Sr.; Brandon Castelo, DB, Jr.; Malcolm Dixon, QB/DB, Sr.; Ruben Favela, OL/DT, Sr.; Andrew Guevara, RB/S, Sr.
