Her first service helped tie the match. The second one effectively put Foothill in the driver’s seat of the Crestview League standings.

Knights freshman Abby Greubel delivered two perfectly placed passes from distance on Tuesday, finishing with a pair of assists on set pieces that gave No. 7 Foothill a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 6 Canyon in a crucial league battle at Foothill High.

“We found a way to grind it out,” Knights coach Steve Patterson said. “Set plays were the difference today. … It puts us in a nice position to hopefully win back-to-back titles again this year for the league.”

Foothill (11-4-4, 3-0) appears to be playing some of the best soccer in the county of late, reeling off seven consecutive victories. By extending its winning streak Tuesday, the Knights took a one-game lead over the Comanches in what’s arguably the area’s deepest league.

After a scoreless first half, Canyon freshman Jennifer Rose gave her squad a 1-0 edge in the 47th minute, taking a pass from Mikayla Arcebido and putting it past Knights keeper Justine Rendl.

Foothill responded seven minutes later when Greubel served an indirect free from 40 yards out into the box and onto the head of Cameron Carty, who scored the equalizer.

With Arcebido, Rose and freshman Penelope Hocking applying constant pressure in the attacking third late in the second half, Canyon created a handful of scoring opportunities, none of which was able to sneak past Rendl.

“We were dominant that last 10 minutes,” Comanches coach Christy Medlin added. “We hoped we could carry that over into the overtime, but it just didn’t happen for us.”

In the fourth minute of the sudden-death overtime period, Greubel delivered a corner kick to the far post, hitting teammate Avery Barbera for the winning goal.
