IRVINE – Corona del Mar capped another perfect Pacific Coast League season Friday night, defeating Northwood, 14-0, at Irvine High to wrap up its third outright league title in a row.

Corona del Mar (9-1, 5-0) clinched a share of the crown last week with a 35-13 victory over Beckman.

Friday night, the Sea Kings used a pair of touchdown runs in the first half by quarterback Chase Garbers to finish the deal and win their 15th consecutive league game over three seasons.

“We’ve got to be happy with the league championship,” CdM coach Scott Meyer said.

Corona del Mar, which won three CIF-SS Southern Division titles in a row, is moving up to the Southwest Division playoff grouping this season and has a chance of being seeded first.

“We were No. 1 last week, and I would hope we wouldn’t drop but at worst to the two seed,” Meyer said.

Garbers, a sophomore, did a solid job moving the Sea Kings offense, passing for 204 yards and scoring on touchdown runs of 38 and 1 yards in the first half. Cole Martin rushed for 91 yards for the Sea Kings.

CdM’s defense was tough all night, limiting Northwood (7-3, 3-2) to 71 yards passing and 46 yards rushing. CdM was able to overcome 12 penalties.

Quarterback Brian Abel passed for 58 yards to lead the Timberwolves, who were trying to earn a share of their first league title since 2003. Northwood also advances to the CIF playoffs as the third-place team from the Pacific Coast League.

Northwood moved the ball to the Corona del Mar 42 late in the first quarter but the drive stalled.

“I’m so proud of our kids; they played really hard,” Northwood coach Dean Toohey said. “I asked them for 100 percent and they gave me four quarters of 100 percent. That’s a great CdM football team on the other side of the field and we gave them all they wanted.”
