COSTA MESA – Five holes changed everything for Lilia Vu during the final round of the Sunset League championship Tuesday at Costa Mesa Country Club.

On the 14th tee of the Mesa Linda course, the Fountain Valley senior trailed Newport Harbor’s Grace Ferrell, but Vu finished with two birdies and an eagle to post a 4-under-par 66.

She ended the 27-hole tournament with a 104, which gave her a three-shot victory over Fearrell.

“I was just doing my thing, my normal game,” Vu said. “This is good for my confidence.”

Vu picked up three shots on Ferrell when she eagled the par-4, 16th, while Ferrell took a bogey.

“I was just focusing on shooting a good number,” Ferrell said. “Anything in the 60s.”

She did that, shooting a 1-under 69 to finish the Sunset League finals with a 107. Edison’s Pilar Hurtado finished third after firing an even-par 70 to post a 111, while Huntington Beach freshman Ella Poljak, the first-round leader, placed fourth with a 113 after finishing with a 76.

“I was very disappointed at the end. I wish I could have done better,” Poljak said. “But it is hard to compete with her (Vu).”
