While Los Alamitos shared the Sunset League boys tennis title with Fountain Valley in the regular season, the Griffins brought home plenty of individual hardware from the league finals Thursday at Marina High.

Riley Smith, recently selected the league’s MVP, edged out Newport Harbor’s Reese Stalder, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), to claim the singles crown, while Los Alamitos’ Vatsal Bajpai and Kyle McCann claimed a second consecutive doubles title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Parker Braverman and Darren Nguyen of Fountain Valley.

By winning the individual titles, Smith and the Bajpai-McCann tandem will represent the Sunset League in the CIF-SS Individual tournament, which begins in two weeks.

In the Pacific Coast League: University’s Drew Dawson captured the league’s singles championship with a win over Corona del Mar sophomore Bjorn Hoffmann, 8-7 (8-6).

The Trojans were unable to sweep, however, as the doubles team of Eric Tseng and Arash Hafezi fell to Northwood’s Kevin Wong and Nathan Nguyen, 8-3.

In the Trinity League: Servite teammates Richard Han and Tanner Smith were slated to play in the singles final, but injuries suffered by Smith forced him to withdraw, giving Han the individual championship.

On the doubles side, Santa Margarita’s top tandem of Ricky Kurtz and Ryan Dugan beat their teammates, Jordan Geis and Tyler McDonald, 7-5, 6-3.
