Canyon got a big win but little time to enjoy it.
The Comanches defeated Foothill, 5-3, Tuesday in a nine-inning Century League game at Foothill.
The victory extends league-leading Canyon’s lead over Foothill to 1½ games. The Comanches board a bus again Wednesday for another league game.
“We’ve got to get right back at it with two tough ones against El Mo,” said Canyon first-year coach Matt Morris. The Comanches are at El Modena on Wednesday and play host to the Vanguards on Friday.
The Comanches (12-5, 7-1) scored three runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie. One run scored on an error, the others on a two-run single by Kevin Foley.
Foothill (11-8, 6-3) scored in the bottom of the ninth when Dylan Doherty doubled and came home on Randell Kanemaru’s two-out double. Foley, who played third base before taking the mound in the eighth, got the final out to preserve the win.
Foley had four hits and three RBI. Jordan Gillerman and John Zanze contributed run-scoring singles for the Comanches.
Doherty had three hits for Foothill. Knights starting pitcher Sebastian Lopez, a junior left-hander, went eight innings in which he allowed two earned runs. He retired 11 Comanches in a row in the first half of the game.
Foothill finished seventh in the seven-team Freeway League last season with a 4-10 league record. The Knights are among the more improved teams in Orange County baseball.
“Foothill’s coming up pretty well,” Foley said. “That’s a very good hitting team.”
