The “big boys” got the ball rolling for the sixth-ranked Fountain Valley wrestling team on Tuesday and it was a good thing they did.

The Sunset League dual against Marina started at 197 pounds. Ben Madrid (197), Alex Damschen (222) and Bryant Vasquez (heavyweight) all won their matches by fall to jumpstart the Barons’ run to a third consecutive league title.

Fountain Valley defeated Marina, 41-33.

“We bumped (Vasquez) up (to heavyweight), thought we could at least get the two pins (at 197 and 222), but Vasquez comes out with a pin, so that was huge,” Fountain Valley coach Brad Woodbury said.

After losing at 108 pounds, the Barons won three consecutive matches, all scoring bonus points – Karson Ayres and Kyle Knoke by major decision and David Galdamez by fall – for a 31-point lead after the first seven matches.

Andrew Morgan sealed the outcome and title with a victory by fall at 154 pounds.

Marina won the final three matches, two by fall (Ryker Coppa at 172 and Mark Gad at 184).

“This league is tough,” Woodbury said. “There are always tough kids, it is stressful. You just have to wrestle tough and be consistent.”

“We’ve been pretty consistent throughout the years, coaching-wise, kids … these kids are great, they’re training hard and they love it.”
