Mason masterful as Aztecs clinch share of title
Scott Mason pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts and Brad Anderson homered for Esperanza as the Aztecs beat El Dorado, 4-0, Wednesday in a Century League baseball game at El Dorado.
The victory clinched a share of the league championship for Esperanza, which is 18-6 overall and 12-3 in league. The Aztecs are ranked No. 4 in Orange County and No. 10 in CIF-Southern Section Division 1.
It is the 13th league championship in Mike Curran's 32 years coaching Esperanza baseball.
El Dorado still is in good position for one of the Century League's four guaranteed playoff berths. The Golden Hawks, No. 5 in the county, are 15-9 overall and in second place with a 9-6 league record. Esperanza and El Dorado have three league games remaining before the playoffs begin May 15.
Mason, a senior left-hander, gave up six hits and walked none.
"Scotty got touched up last time out," said Curran, referring to Mason's struggles in an 8-3 loss to El Modena last week. "But he's such a competitor."
It was a good day for Anderson. His home run, his third of the season that pushed his team-leading RBI total to 23, was a solo shot in the fifth inning. After the game, Anderson committed to Pepperdine.
El Dorado made four errors, two of which contributed to Esperanza's two-run third inning that made it 2-0. Mark Tumlinson's squeeze bunt in the fourth sent home Mitch Mosman to make it 3-0, and Anderson's homer concluded the scoring.
