COSTA MESA – The Laurent brothers were the perfect combination for the Estancia football team in the team’s season opener Thursday.

Senior Christian Laurent rushed for 176 yards on 27 carries and brother Dylan, a sophomore, was a threat every time he touched the ball, scoring two rushing touchdowns, intercepting a pass and returning a punt 55 yards for another touchdown.

The brothers helped lead the Eagles to a 48-20 victory over visiting Loara (0-2).

“He’s a slasher and he has some deceiving speed,” Estancia coach Mike Bargas said of Dylan Laurent. “They were a good 1-2 punch tonight.”

Dylan Laurent scored his first touchdown in the second quarter on a 61-yard run. His punt return came in the third quarter to give the Eagles (1-0) a 27-7 lead.

“It was originally return right, but I saw an opening,” he said, adding “… I went with my gut and went (left). There were great blocks up front.”

He later capped his night with a 16-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

In all, it was the perfect way to begin the season for the sophomore, who earned all-league honors last year.

“There’s always room for improvement,” he said. “I want to get out here and improve every day.”

Estancia was the preseason pick to win the Orange Coast League.
