The Register’s list of the top five players to watch this season in boys tennis.
TOP PLAYERS TO WATCH THIS SEASON
Max Cancilla, Marina: The Penn-bound senior has been a mainstay atop the Vikings lineup since he arrived on campus. He is aiming to close out his high school career with a Sunset League singles title. Cancilla is ranked seventh overall in the state and 34th nationally.
Bjorn Hoffmann, Corona del Mar: The Cal-bound senior was runner-up at the prestigious Ojai Tournament last spring and second in the Pacific Coast League’s individual tournament. Hoffmann could sweep both titles this year. He went 42-5 last year and has climbed to No. 21 in the national rankings.
Josh Piatos, University: He has been one of the program’s steadiest performers in recent years and will be looked upon to guide the team on another deep postseason run. Piatos’ versatility and consistency earned him a second-team All-County nod last season.
Riley Smith, Los Alamitos: He was brilliant in the team’s run to the CIF-SS Division 1 championship last season, and he’s only getting better. Smith’s wicked service is tops in the county. The 6-foot-5 USC signee is ranked eighth in the nation. He might be the favorite to win Ojai and CIF-SS titles this spring.
Axel Stern, Beckman: Stern played an integral role in the Patriots’ drive to their first CIF-SS Division 1 semifinal. The senior, a four-star Quinnipiac recruit, will challenge for the Pacific Coast League singles title and figures to have the Patriots in contention for the league crown as well.
