OCVarsity’s scouting report for the Orange Coast League:

OCVARSITY PREDICTS

1. Estancia: The difference between first and second place appears slim again this season. The Eagles get the slight edge with league co-MVP Connor Brown returning.

2. Calvary Chapel: Quarterback Patrick Glasgow and the Eagles should be able to score points, but can they stop their opponent? That will be the key question.

3. Costa Mesa: New coach Glen Fisher comes in and will attempt to get things turned around. With talented players, such as Cameron Curet and Mason Mataafa, the Mustangs have the cornerstones for a team that could contend for a playoff berth.

4. Saddleback: The Roadrunners made the playoffs last season for the first time since 2006. Coach Rob Thompson believes his team has a chance to win the league title.

5. Laguna Beach: New coach Ted Clarke inherits a team with only one starter back on defense. The Breakers had some key players transfer out, leaving behind a young and inexperienced group.

6. Godinez: The Grizzlies are prepared to fight their out of last place. They’ll rely on a strong running game and senior leadership.

COACHES’ POLL

1. Estancia, 34 poll points (4)

2. Calvary Chapel, 27 (1)

3T. Costa Mesa, 20

3T. Saddleback, 20 (1)

5. Godinez, 14

6. Laguna Beach, 11

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Mason Mataafa, Costa Mesa: Coach Glen Fisher calls Mataafa a “pretty special kid.” Fisher thinks Mataafa might be the best player in the league, and maybe the division, too. He is a relentless tackler on defense as an inside linebacker and he plays with a physical, bruising style as a tight end on offense, too. The 6-3, 225-pound senior has scholarship offers from San Jose State and Colorado State. Last year he recorded 127 tackles with seven sacks.

OTHER IMPACT PLAYERS

Cameron Curet, Costa Mesa, WR/OLB: Curet did a little bit of everything last season, and it appears that will happen again this season. He led the team in rushing last season (937 yards).

Jack Simon, Laguna Beach, QB: The senior and leader for the Breakers passed for 1,208 yards last season with 12 touchdowns.

Pedro Leon, Saddleback, RB/SS: The two-way star is back to torment the opposition. The senior rushed for 698 yards and recorded 64 tackles last season.

Connor Brown, Estancia, QB: Brown was the league’s co-offensive player of the year last season when he passed for 1,583 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Patrick Glasgow, Calvary Chapel, QB: The junior completed 244 of 378 passes for 2,665 yards and 21 touchdowns last season.

Bryan Ibarra, Godinez, QB: Ibarra is slated to start at quarterback. He recorded 48 tackles last season as a free saftey.

MUST-SEE GAMES

Estancia vs. Calvary Chapel, Oct. 9: In the battle of Eagles, Estancia hasn’t lost to Calvary Chapel since 2008.

Estancia vs. Costa Mesa, Oct. 16: The 49th annual Battle for the Bell game brings city rivals together. The Eagles have won four of the last five meetings.

Calvary Chapel vs. Saddleback, Oct. 22: Last year’s game was out of control as the Roadrunners outlasted the Eagles, 59-47.

Saddleback vs. Laguna Beach, Oct. 16: The Roadrunners won their first four league games last season. They’re looking to start this season with the same success.
