LA HABRA – Two things were certain on Friday night at La Habra High. First, if Sunny Hills got near the goal line, the Lancers were handing the ball to fullback Cade Caffrey.

The second certainty was that if that happened, Caffrey would score, which he did four times to lead the Lancers to a 42-26 victory over Sonora in a Freeway League game.

Caffrey sealed the victory for the Lancers (6-2, 2-1) with two fourth-quarter touchdowns that helped to hold off a rally by the Raiders (0-8, 0-3). Caffrey carried the ball 21 times for 121 yards and caught one of only two passes that the Lancers completed for an additional 13 yards.

The Lancers didn’t need to pass the ball more than twice because their running game was controlling the clock. The Lancers finished with 357 yards rushing and had drives of 6:12 and 5:50 in the first half, both resulting in touchdowns. The trio of Caffrey, Alex Jung, who finished with a game-high 143 yards, and Brandon Castelo, who added 90 yards rushing, combined for all six Lancers touchdowns.

The Raiders got as close as 27-20 in the fourth quarter. The scoring drive that cut the lead to a single touchdown saw quarterback Ryan Martinez connect with Landon Williams on a 34-yard completion on fourth-and-27, then they paired up for an 18-yard TD pass. Raiders quarterback Derek Cull threw two TD passes to Chigozie Amusiem for the team’s first two scores.
