Dwyer is better than perfect in Orange Lutheran's dramatic win
The rain didn't spoil everyone's day at the Carew Classic on Friday.
In fact, Orange Lutheran's Maddy Dwyer had a day she'll likely never forget - for all the right reasons.
The junior pitched a perfect game that included six strikeouts, and she slugged a two-run home run in the sixth inning that gave the No. 5 Lancers a 2-0 victory over Amador Valley of Pleasanton in the quarterfinals at Peralta Canyon Park in Anaheim.
The Lancers (16-3) advanced to the semifinals, where they will face the winner of the Los Alamitos-Mission Viejo quarterfinal that was halted by rain Friday after two innings.
Lance Eddy, the tournament's organizer, is trying to get the remaining games, including the final, completed next week.
For now, Dwyer and the Lancers can relax a bit after their tightly contested battle with Amador Valley (9-2), ranked 10th in the state by CalHiSports.com.
In the sixth, Noelle Hee drew a one-out walk for the Lancers, setting the stage for Dwyer's homer. On a 1-2 count, Dwyer sent the ball over the left field fence.
