Kenric Jameison, who coached Lakewood High to the CIF-SS Pac-5 playoffs in his first season as football coach, has stepped down for personal reasons.

Jameison’s was 5-6 in his only season. The Lancers were 6-5 on the field but forfeited a win against Gahr because of an ineligible player.

Jameison’s brief tenure included several twists. His coaching experience before being hired was one year as a JV coach at Rancho Christian High, its first year of organized football, and one varsity game in 2012 before he was let go and the school shut down the varsity program after a 43-6 loss in the opener to La Serna. The program sustained many injuries and the school was scheduled to play many higher-division teams.

When hired at Lakewood, he introduced a team of assistants with NFL experience, including former Long Beach State and NFL running back Terrell Davis, but few joined his staff, either not meeting LBUSD requirements or taking jobs elsewhere. No timeline has been announced for a replacement. The new coach will be Lakewood’s fourth in five seasons.

49ers stay alive

The Long Beach State sand volleyball team beat UCLA, 4-1, on Tuesday to keep its hopes of a berth in the AVCA National Championships alive.

The 49ers are ranked No.5 nationally, and three teams from the West Coast are expected to get bids. Pepperdine and Hawaii are expected to get bids.

All four wins came in consecutive sets. Janisa Johnson had 13 kills and three aces, and Tyler Jackson had three blocks and two aces as the pair rolled to a 21-12, 21-6 win over Zoe Nightingale and Madie Smith.

Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Tordorovic won 21-15, 21-13 over Kamila Tan and Jessyka Ngauamo, and Chelsea Cabrajac and Bre Mackie beat Taylor Formico and Karsta Lowe.
