Two years ago, Villa Park did what has become seemingly impossible. On March14, 2011 at Green River Golf Course, the Spartans beat Corona del Mar.

Since then, the Sea Kings have been perfect, winning 45 consecutive matches. They have opened this season 6-0 after beating Aliso Niguel, 195-210, on Thursday at El Niguel Country Club.

Corona del Mar has broken 180 once so far this season, and has yet to post a score higher than 195, giving the Sea Kings a 187.33 nine-hole stroke average.

Chase Wheatley has medaled or shared medalist honors in every match the Sea Kings have played this season. In Thursday’s match against the Wolverines, he and Walter Frome shot a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine at El Niguel CC to lead the Sea Kings.

That was the first time this season Wheatley has finished over par, giving him a 34.1. He is 7-under in the six matches that he has medaled.

The Spartans and Sea Kings will meet again at Green River on March 20.

TESORO WINS

Even though Tesoro’s standout junior golfer, Gordon Neale, was not in the lineup Monday, Tesoro won the JSerra Invitational, shooting a 64 in the tournament at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club that uses three-man teams and a best-ball format.

Jack Ireland, Riley Kumamoto and Chase Van Bergh teed it up for the Titans and finished two strokes ahead of the JSerra threesome of Mike Cronk, Jack Lutz and Chase Anderson. Cronk just joined the team after helping to lead the JSerra boys soccer team to the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

Andre Vu earned medalist honors, shooting a 2-under 70. JSerra’s Terrance O’Hagan holed an ace on the 175-yard, 13th hole with a 4-iron.

MATER DEI STREAK

Mater Dei will travel to Spring Valley Lake Country Club in Victorville on Monday, hoping to win the Diamondback Tournament for the seventh consecutive season. Last year, Marcus De La Rosa posted an even-par 72 to become the fifth consecutive Mater Dei golfer to post the low score at the event. Brian Campbell, now a freshman at Illinois, won the tournament from 2009-11 and Matt Morales topped the leader board for the Monarchs in 2008.

Mater Dei’s worst finish in the tournament is second, in 2006. Two days after playing in the Diamondback Tournament, the Monarchs will be at Willowick Golf Course, playing host to one of the best boys golf teams in the Southern Section — Long Beach Wilson.

The Bruins are led by Hunter Epson, a player Servite coach Dane Jako said is a Patrick Cantlay-caliber player. Jako should know. He coached Cantlay, who on Sunday won his first professional event, finishing with an 18-under 288 at the Web.com Colombia Championship in Bogota.
