ANAHEIM — Katella’s first-year boys basketball coach Rod Caires said he exepected his team to be weary at the start of Friday’s game against Los Amigos, having suffered an overtime loss the night before.

The Knights got off to a sluggish start, but found their defense and defeated the Lobos, 48-36, in a nonleague game at Katella High.

The Knights held Los Amigos scoreless in the fourth quarter and held them to 13 points in the third quarter. Katella scored 31 second-half points.

“I think we finally found our energy,” Caires said about the second-half action. “We found our second wind is what we did. Just sucked it up and played defense.”

Katella (4-8) was led on offense by guard Michael Weston, who shot 9 of 16 from the field and 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Weston also made one 3-pointer and finished with 22 points.

Edward Williams was an important part of Katella’s second-half defensive effort and also scored nine points.

“Our goal is to keep teams under 40,” Caires said. “If we can keep anyone between 40 and 45, we feel pretty confident we’re going to win those games.”

Orel Cruz shot 4-for-6 from the field and scored 11 points for Los Amigos (7-4). Sergio Salgado finished with 9 points.

While Katella drove to the basket often but had trouble making its shots (6 of 26 shooting) in the first half, Los Amigos took advantage of its scoring opportunities and led 23-17 at halftime.

Los Amigos shot 10 of 29 from the field in the first half.
