IRVINE – Jeff Kamo couldn’t hide on the court if he tried.

The senior outside hitter for the Beckman boys volleyball team wore a pair of bright green shoes and put in a lot of work, carrying the load Tuesday night, leading the Patriots back for a five-set victory over visiting Northwood in a Pacific Coast League match.

Kamo recorded a career-high 33 kills in the 22-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11 triumph that kept the Patriots (14-8, 5-1) on the heels of first-place Corona del Mar.

“I’m exhausted,” he said afterward. “But happy about it (the victory). We couldn’t get our passing going and it locks up our pins and it is harder for our offense to work.”

After managing to tie the match, the Patriots opened the fifth game with renewed life. They led 10-5 before Northwood (11-9, 3-3) took its first timeout.

After the brief break, the Timberwolves started to make a run, eventually forcing the Patriots to take a timeout with the score 13-10.

Kamo got things back on track with a kill and later ended the match with another.

“They’re a different team from the first time we saw them,” Beckman coach Darin McBain said of Northwood. “They had a different rotation that was causing us some trouble. They had one rotation where they were 6-6, 6-7, across the front and we’re not used to seeing anything like that. My biggest guy is maybe 6-2, so we’re swinging against a block that big. They blocked a lot of balls and got us out of our rhythm.”

Beckman is in sole possession of second place with two weeks (four matches) remaining in the regular season, including a showdown with the first-place Sea Kings on May 2.

Jake Linsky led Northwood with 14 kills. Drew Sloane, Eric Weis and Brad Weyand had 11 kills apiece. Linsky, Sloane and Weis combined for 15 blocks.

“We want to finish out strong and get ready for CIF,” Kamo said.
