The JSerra girls soccer team wants to establish a new reign over the Trinity League, and the Lions took a first big step toward making it happen Thursday.

JSerra, ranked No. 3 in the county, scored twice in the opening 20 minutes and held on to defeat defending league champion No. 2 Santa Margarita, 2-0, in a Trinity League game played in the rain at JSerra High.

“I think it’s more of, for the JSerra girls, to to know that they’re better than they have been in the past,” JSerra coach Greg Baker said of what his team gained with the win, “and to know that they’re better than these teams now.”

The county’s leading goal scorer, Isabella D’Aquila, didn’t find the net but still managed to stir up the offense for JSerra (10-1-1, 2-0-0).

Five minutes in, D’Aquila got deep in the right corner and sent a low cross to the top of the box. Arizona State-commit Samantha Hobert stepped up with a left-footed strike for the opening goal.

“I saw (D’Aquila) by herself in the corner, and I was like, shoot, there’s no one up there,” Hobert said. “So I started running into the middle of the field, right where she kicked it and it happened to perfectly line up for where I was running.”

Just over 10 minutes later, D’Aquila jumped into the air against an Eagles defender and the goalkeeper and managed to head the ball to the right side. Julie Doyle was there to put the ball in the empty cage for 2-0 lead.

“They (JSerra) truly have that attacking machine where that’s a missing part for us,” Santa Margarita coach Chuck Morales said. “Their acceleration when they get into the attacking third is quick, man.”

Santa Margarita (9-2-1, 1-1-0) had the better possession time, as is its style, but couldn’t get anything dangerous on net.

The Eagles’ best chances were in the second half on 23-yard free kick that went high and wide and a late corner kick that didn’t connect.

In the South Coast League:

No. 4 Aliso Niguel 2, No. 9 Dana Hills 1: SJ Affleck scored a goal and assisted on another in the second half as the Wolverines overcame a 1-0 deficit at halftime.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 6 Corona del Mar 1, University 1: The Sea Kings (12-0-3, 0-0-2) earned their second draw in two league games.
