IRVINE – Jack Johnson ran for 246 yards and four touchdowns as Crean Lutheran defeated Capistrano Valley Christian, 46-6, in a nonleague game Thursday at Irvine High.

Johnson, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound sophomore, scored on runs of 1, 4, 57 and 11 yards. Saints quarterback Gavin Folsom passed for 140 yards and a touchdown and added 75 rushing yards. Anthony Cooper ran for 58 yards for Crean Lutheran, and Zach Macadam added two TD runs.

Macadam also had two of the Saints’ five sacks.

Crean Lutheran is 5-1 and ranked No. 4 in CIF-Southern Section Division 11. Capistrano Valley Christian is 2-3.

Johnson impressed Crean coach Matt Bowman.

“He’s a great kid,” Bowman said. “He ran harder as the game went along. I don’t know how many missed tackles he created but it was a lot.”

Johnson praised the Saints’ offensive line of Ben Beavers, Tanner Atkinson, Michael McNerney, Kyle Betz, Ryan Lidd and Maximus Bahou, who took over for Beavers after Beavers was injured in the first half.

“I’ve got the easy part,” Johnson said. “I give all the credit to them.”

Johnson scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards on the Saints’ first two possessions. Folsom connected with Patrick McNerney on a 15-yard touchdown pass for a 19-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Saints made it 26-0 on Macadam’s 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Capistrano Valley’s touchdown was on a 30-yard pass from Dawson Piper to Trey Henry in the third quarter.

Johnson scored on a 57-yard, tackle-busting run late in the third quarter and added an 11-yard scoring run early in the fourth. Macadam’s 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter concluded the scoring and created the final 46-6 tally.

Crean Lutheran plays St. Monica at Santa Monica College next Friday. The Saints’ loss was to Aquinas of San Benardino, the No. 1 team in the Division 10 top 10. They are averaging 43 points a game.

Capistrano Valley Christian plays Fairmont Prep next Thursday at Yorba Linda High.

For the Eagles, who had a bye last week, it was another tough lopsided loss to absorb. They lost to Brethren Christian by 48 points in their previous game.
