All good things must come to an end. For Corona del Mar’s boys team, a good thing — a 36-game winning streak — came to an end Monday.

San Ramon Valley of Danville defeated the Sea Kings, 10-9, and snapped the school’s victory march.

Corona del Mar went undefeated last season and started 12-0 this season. It was the Sea Kings’ first loss in nearly two calendar years.

“It’s a terrific accomplishment,” CDM coach GW Mix said. “But we didn’t make much of it. It was never a point of focus for us, but I’m sure we’ll be pretty proud when we look back on it.”

Losing after a long winning streak is often compared to a boxer who is knocked down for the first time in his career, but Mix believes his team will benefit from the loss.

“There’s always positives when you make mistakes,” Mix said. “In the past, we’ve found ways to get better from winning, but you can always learn from a loss.”

The Sea Kings bounced back and defeated Amador Valley of Pleasanton, 14-5, the next day. They will look to make it a two-game winning streak when they take on Trinity League leader St. Margaret’s today at 1 p.m. at St. Margaret’s.

Aliso Niguel girls win rematch with Capo Valley

The first meeting between the No. 2 Aliso Niguel and No. 3 Capistrano Valley girls teams lasted five overtimes before a winner was crowned. The Wolverines left with a 15-14 victory.

The sequel didn’t require five overtimes, but for Aliso Niguel, it still called for plenty of work.

Trailing by three goals early, the Wolverines rallied to defeat the Cougars, 11-7.

The win brought Aliso Niguel closer to its goal of a Sea View League title.

“The game was important to the girls,” Wolverines coach Dave Elkins said. “One of our preseason goals was to win league outright.”

The season has been a success for Aliso Niguel, whose only loss came to No. 1 Los Alamitos.

Elkins said the girls want to make a more significant run in the playoffs than they did last year, when they lost to the Griffins in the quarterfinals.

Jackson leads in goal for Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach’s boys team has been enjoying a successful season. The Oilers are 11-3 with those three losses coming to the teams ranked first through third in the Register’s Top 10 poll.

The Oilers wouldn’t be in the spot they are without the skills of goalkeeper Trevor Jackson.

“It’s special,” Huntington Beach coach Brian Dunn said about the chance to coach a player like Jackson. “He’s been a starter now for four years. To have a goalie who has played that much lacrosse at a high level is an asset.”

The Oilers lost three senior defenders from last season’s team, but Dunn said he wasn’t too concerned because having Jackson in net is like having another coach on the field.

Jackson says he’s had no problem taking on a leadership role.

“It’s pretty cool (being a leader),” he said. “It’s weird, having my brother being one of the leaders his senior year, to now me. But I feel it’s part of growing up, taking the reins from the guy in front of you and carrying it on.”

Despite his team’s loss to Foothill on Thursday, Jackson still saw the bright side.

“Some games slip under our belt, but you know what?” Jackson said. “Lacrosse is fun and I have a lot fun playing.”
