Huntington Beach is going to try to do what Mater Dei did.

Huntington Beach is off the the National High School Invitational in North Carolina. The Oilers won the tournament last season.

Mater Dei won the NHSI in its first two seasons, 2012 and ’13.

San Clemente won the NHSI title in 2015. Orange County teams have won four of the five NHSIs.

The First Academy of Orlando, Fla., won in 2014 and is in the NHSI again this year.

Dana Hills and Orange Lutheran also are in this year’s NHSI which begins Wednesday and continues through Saturday, April 1. USA Baseball and Baseball America are the hosts of the event at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Also in the tournament is the No. 1 team in Baseball America’s national rankings, Archbishop McCarthy of Southwest Ranches, Fla.

Huntington Beach is No. 5 on the Baseball America national list. Orange Lutheran is No. 22.

Around the horn in Orange County baseball:

• Mater Dei is No. 23 in the Baseball American national top 25 which was last updated on March 21, before the Monarchs were swept by El Toro in a doubleheader.

• In this week’s CIF-Southern Section rankings, Huntington Beach is No. 1 in Division 1. South Hills of West Covina and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, both in the NHSI this week, are at No. 2 and 3, respectively in Division 1. Orange Lutheran is No. 4, Servite is No. 5, Mission Viejo is No. 8 and El Toro is No. 10 in Division 1.

• Also in the CIF-SS polls, Beckman is No. 1 in Division 2. Other highly ranked county teams are Capistrano Valley Christian, No. 3 in Division 4; and Katella and Century, at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, in Division 5.

• St. Michael’s Prep senior pitcher John Howard had 16 strikeouts in a five-inning, 16-2 win over Eastside Christian on Friday. He struck out 16 because one of the batters he struck out reached safely on a passed ball.

• Sage Hill sophomore pitcher Ashwin Chona has pitched back-to-back no-hitters, including a 10-0, five-inning win Monday over Santa Rosa Academy in the Anaheim Lions Tournament. He threw a seven-inning no-hitter last week in an Academy League win over Whitney of Cerritos.

• Sage Hill’s undefeated streak is at 40 games. The Lightning is 12-0-1 this season. The pitching staff, which includes senior Brett Super who is 5-0 with 50 strikeouts in 34 innings, has a team ERA of 1.01.

• Woodbridge’s Jackson Lyon has at least one hit in all 10 of the team’s games. He is batting .548.

• Huntington Beach’s Josh Hahn had the game-winning hit and pitched two innings of scoreless relief in the Oilers’ 1-0 win over Edison in a Sunset League game on March 22.

• Orange Lutheran outfielder Garrett Mitchell was 4 for 4 with 6 RBIs on Friday, March 24, in the Lancers’ 21-5 win over Santa Margarita.

• The Anaheim Lions Tournament continues this week. The website AnaheimLionsTourney.com is updated regularly with schedules and scores. It is a huge tournament, with 75 participants. The championship game is Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at La Palma Park in Anaheim.

• The Ryan Lemmon Invitational begins Saturday. It has most of the Irvine city schools in it, and also Canyon, Capistrano Valley and El Modena. Go to RyanLemmonFoundation.com for schedules and admission fee information.

• The Santa Elks Tournament begins Saturday, April 1. It has the Santa Ana schools in it, and Northwood and Villa Park among others.

• The Newport Rib Co. Classic, which was called the Pride of the Coast Tournament in a previous life, starts April 5. Beckman, Corona del Mar, St. John Bosco and Servite are among the teams there.

• The National Classic, again with El Dorado and Esperanza as hosts, begins April 10. It has some excellent teams in it, including Baseball America’s No. 2 team in its national rankings, Buchanan of Clovis, and Basic of Henderson, Nev., which is No. 20 in Baseball America’s national top 25. County schools Cypress and JSerra also are in it.

• The Boras Classic, with JSerra and Mater Dei again hosting, starts April 18. Aliso Niguel, El Toro, Huntington Beach, Orange Lutheran and the host schools are the O.C. teams that will participate.

• Corona del Mar’s home game April 4 against Beckman will start with a dedication ceremony for late umpire Randy Gersten. Gersten was well known around Newport Beach area baseball. Both of his sons attended Corona del Mar.
