There was no shortage of shoulder bumping or jersey pulling on the field, which is why yellow cards were handed out so frequently throughout the game.

Four weeks after their first encounter, the girls soccer teams for No. 2 Edison and No. 3 Huntington Beach took the physicality and intensity to a new level Thursday night. After another 100 minutes of soccer, however, neither the Chargers nor the Oilers were able to separate themselves from their counterpoint.

Edison and Huntington Beach played to their second overtime draw of the season, the latest installment resulting in a 1-1 tie at Huntington Beach High, kicking off the second half of Sunset League play.

The Oilers (14-1-5) remained atop the league standings with a 4-0-2 record. The Chargers (9-2-6), who lost to Los Alamitos on Tuesday, sit in third place with a 1-1-4 mark.

“They took a fall at Los Al, and I knew they were going to come out stronger and hungrier than ever,” Huntington Beach coach Raul Ruiz said. “They’re pretty much fighting like everybody else. … The game got physical and it was basically like a playoff atmosphere.”

Four yellow cards were handed out, two penalty kicks were awarded and one player was sent off in overtime.

Oilers forward Sawyer Koelsch drew the first penalty kick in the 31st minute when she was taken down while making a run inside the box. Junior midfielder Darcy Weiser put Huntington Beach ahead, 1-0, when she converted the penalty.

The Chargers peppered the Oilers’ goalkeepers – Kate Hart and Rachel Harris – consistently throughout the night, firing six shots on goal in the first half and five in the second.

“We battled back,” Edison coach Kerry Crooks said. “And we needed to show that today. We’ve been stuck in a rut for a little while.”

Sophomore forward Amy Feinstein had three opportunities to score in the opening 40 minutes, but Hart was able to turn away all three close-range shots.

Feinstein continued to be a headache for the Huntington Beach back line in the second half, eventually drawing a foul inside the box in the 72nd minute.

The striker tied the match at 1-1, sneaking the penalty past a diving Harris, which sent the game into the two 10-minute overtime periods.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 1, No. 1 Aliso Niguel 0: Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy recorded 13 saves and Sophia Spralja scored a second-half goal to fuel the Tritons’ upset victory over the Wolverines (13-2-1, 4-1-0).

San Clemente (6-7-4, 3-2-0) snapped Aliso’s seven-match winning streak.
