Mission Viejo's Palomino ties state home run record

Mission Viejo center fielder Alyssa Palomino hit a pair of home runs in a South Coast League game against Aliso Niguel on Thursday afternoon, tying the Diablos slugger for most career homers in state history with 53.

Just two weeks ago at the Michelle Carew Classic, Palomino became only the fourth player in California history to reach the 50 home run club. After going yard earlier in the week against Dana Hills, Palomino hit her 52nd home run in the third inning against the Wolverines on Thursday.

Her 53rd came an inning later in the fourth, a three-run shot that highlighted Mission Viejo’s 11-0 victory.

The Register’s two-time player of the year is now tied with Alia Williams (Crenshaw, 2006-09), Baillie Kirke (Crescenta Valley, 2006-09) and Darian Tautalafua (Carson, 2009-12) for most career home runs in state history.

“It was phenomenal watching (former El Toro star) Lauren Chamberlain and coaching against her,” Mission Viejo coach Troy Ybarra said Thursday evening, recalling the former O.C. career record-holder. “We tried to pitch around her (Chamberlain) and there were some times where we’d muscle up, pitch to her, and she’d do what she does best.

“But to have that player on our side of the dirt now is amazing to see. … And teams aren’t giving her much to hit. She’s got five walks this week alone.”

53: Alyssa Palomino, Mission Viejo (2011-current)
53: Alia Williams, Crenshaw (2006-2009)

53: Baillie Kirker, Crescenta (Valley, 2006-2009)

53: Darian Tautalafua, Carson (2009-2012)
50: Shawna Wright, Lancaster (2006-2009)

In wins over Dana Hills and Aliso Niguel, Palomino has put together a 4-for-4 stat line, three of those hits being four-baggers, in addition to five walks.

Palomino will have seven regular season games and the playoffs to try to become the state’s all-time home run leader.

In case you were wondering, the national record for career homers, according to the National Federation of High School Associations, is 72, set by Shelby Holley of Pisagh High (Alabama) from 2008-11.
