YORBA LINDA – The El Dorado boys golf team has been playing at Black Gold Golf Course for 10 years, and the Golden Hawks have never had a day like this here as two school records were set in Monday’s Century League match against Brea Olinda.

Matt Lutz finished with a 4-under-par 32, the lowest nine-hole score at the course for an El Dorado player, to help lead El Dorado to a 177-210 victory. This is the first time that the Golden Hawks have finished 3-under par as a team at their home course.

The Golden Hawks No. 1 group finished 5-under-par as Thomas Gutierrez posted a 1-under 35 despite taking a double bogey on the first hole.

“He kept it together. We were talking, and we said, ‘Just birdie the two par 5s and you will be even,’” Lutz said. “But he ended up making one more birdie. We ham and egg really well together.”

Lutz eagled the 480-yard par-5 sixth hole, after using a tailwind to launch a 350-yard drive down the fairway, leaving him 130-yard to the pin. He hit an easy 9 iron, and his approach landed on the green, hopped once and stopped 2 feet from the hole. He also holed three birdies on his round, one in which he hit all seven fairways and eight greens.

He needed only 15 putts to complete his nine hole thanks in part to that 2-foot tap-in on No. 6.

“I missed a couple short putts here and there, but you can’t play every shot perfect,” Lutz said. “I played really good today. My ball striking has been great.”

All five players who figured into the Golden Hawks’ final score broke 40, and the highest score they had to take was a 1-over 37. Tristan Koyl added an even par 36 for El Dorado while Gus Petredes and Cole Alexander both finished with a 37.

“They have spent a lot of time in the offseason, playing and practicing. I am surprised how much better they have gotten over the course of the year,” El Dorado coach Wayne Carlson said. “We aren’t going to do that all of the time (shoot 3-under as a team). The only thing a high school golf coach wants is for the team to be consistent, and I am seeing that.”
