A historic week for Fullerton’s girls water polo team ended in jubilation Saturday night in sudden-death overtime.
Sophomore Emmy Yzguerra scored from about 6 meters to lift the Indians past Murrieta Mesa, 8-7, in the final of the Nogales-hosted Lady Nobles tournament at Diamond Bar.
The Indians rallied from a 6-3 deficit entering the fourth period, capping a week that featured a breakthrough, 7-5 victory against Sunny Hills on Wednesday.
Fullerton (9-3) and first-year coach Shane Unger beat Sunny Hills for the first time since Feb. 3, 2009, snapping a 14-match losing streak against their Freeway League rival.
Yzguerra also tied the score, 7-7, on a rebound goal with 20 seconds left in the fourth period to help force overtime. Fullerton’s Jackie Perez scored on a shot from mid-pool to tie the score, 6-6, in the fourth.

Santa Monica 10, Laguna Hills 4: Tatum Stein made eight of her 12 saves in the second half but the Hawks (10-3) fell to the Division 2 contender and defending champion Vikings at Garden Grove.
Bailey Lloyd, Laguna Hills’ high-scoring senior, fouled out with 4:20 left in the first half and the Hawks’ trailing, 5-2. Lloyd, Isabella Boccia, Yessica Garcia and Lizbeth Ruvalcaba each scored once for Laguna Hills.
In the Falcon tournament:
Northwood 9, Long Beach Millikan 3: The Timberwolves beat the Rams and Kennedy, 4-2, at Santa Ana Valley to finish second behind champion Granite Hills of El Cajon.
In nonleague:
Dos Pueblos 15, No. 3 Mater Dei 14 (OT): Former Laguna Beach standout Sophie Leggett scored a buzzer-beater at the end of regulation to force overtime and the host Chargers opened a 15-13 lead en route to the narrow victory. Mater Dei bounced back to beat host Santa Barbara, 12-8.
The Bishop’s 6, Newport Harbor 4: Robyn Carter scored three goals and Cassidy Ball made 14 saves to pace the visiting The Bishop’s (6-3).
