ORANGE – San Juan Hills began its first offensive series with a turnover and quickly found itself in a three-point hole.

But the Stallions proved it’s not how you start the game but how you finish as their defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way for a 17-3 win over Canyon at El Modena High.

After forcing a three and out on Canyon’s first possession, San Juan Hills took over at their own 7. The Comanches defense then forced a fumble that Hayden Greco immediately pounced on, giving Canyon excellent field position.

The Stallions kept Canyon (0-2) out of the end zone so the Comanches settled for a Max Meyers field goal, giving them a 3-0 lead.

San Juan Hills (2-0) answered with a field goal on its next drive as Jack Montgomery converted from 24 yards to make it 3-3.

Quarterback Doug Jackson found Jacob Huff for a 37- yard reception to ignite a 93-yard Stallions drive that culminated with Brock Cazel’s 2-yard scoring run that produced a 10-3 lead.

San Juan Hills used a two-headed rushing attack with Cole Suchesk and Brock Cazel with Cazel’s 2-yard score capping the go-ahead drive that gave the Stallions a 10-3 lead.

Cazel added another short touchdown run in the third quarter to give the Stallions a 14-point lead.

Canyon threatened to score on its next possession, but the drive was halted when Cameron Buchanan picked off an Anthony Marquez pass at the 5.
